    CLASS ACTRESS

    w/ Kumon Plaza

$50-Dinner for two and two tickets
    $10-Early Bird
    $15-Advance Tickets
    $20-At the door

Class Actress is: Guilty Pleasure. NSA dance music. Casual Encounters. Stalker Pop. Depeche Mode meets early Madonna and Five Star as played on KTU Radio in the leather backseat of a cab.

Elizabeth Harper, a former drama major from Los Angeles, had been writing delicate, wistful songs of longing and detachment for several years when she met musician and psychoanalyst-in-training Mark Richardson in 2009 and asked him to remix one of her tracks. Their creative chemistry was instantaneous – Mark’s production style was cerebral but sensual, relying heavily on vintage synths and drum machines, and influenced by ‘80s bands like Human League and Depeche Mode while still conscious of modern club sounds steeped in hip hop and house. It perfectly complemented the melancholy undertone in Harper’s songs and revealed in them an urge towards ecstatic abandon.

    Commonwealth presents:
    -------------------------------------------------------
Good Company Sundays with DJ EXCEL
    -------------------------------------------------------

Few share the name but only one possesses the actual talent, skill and respect to actually “EXCEL”.

Originally from Philadelphia -DJ Excel, an almost 20 year veteran holds a reputation as one of the few “childhood prodigy’s” in the DJ industry. Deejaying before the technological advancements of laptops and serato, Excel embodies innate talent and inhibits encyclopedia knowledge in a wide range of music. His extended catalog is the blueprint to his ability to create, remix, cut and blend sets that are never duplicated. Excel’s work has been heard internationally with satellite radio spots and numerous highly notable mixtapes.

In 2000, Excel brought together some of the best DJ’s from the East Coast and established Skratch Makaniks: a group of turntablists that made names for themselves blending scratches and free forming beat juggling to their club sets and also over the airwaves; naturally making Skratch Makaniks a collective of the prototype of a DJ’s DJ.

We are having company over every Sunday, and we want you and your friends to join us. Delivering more genres of dance music than you can shake your booty at, whatever company you're with, you'll always be in Good Company at Commonwealth.

Sled Island Kick-Off Party w/ THE DUDES, BEND SINISTER, SHOTGUN JIMMIE & MORE

    Nudie Jeans Co. Presents:

THE BEST EFFING NIGHT OF THE BEST EFFING WEEK OF THE BEST YEAR OF THE BEST LIFE OF YOUR LIFE KICK-OFF SHOW

Calgary’s best-known musical export in the past decade is easily the perfect summer soundtrack. This isn’t rock ‘n’ roll for strung-out wastoids trying to find the answer to life in a gutter. The Dudes are all about wearing their proudly beating hearts on their sleeves and celebrating everything that is beautiful about that perfect July day, when the only things that matters are your best friends and a cold eight-pack of Pil tallboys. Let’s party! facebook.com/wearethedudes

There’s something deceptively joyful about four Vancouverites making pitch-perfect prog pop. It just screams of a healthy coast lifestyle, immaculate summer afternoons on the beach and pleasant dinners with your besties to cap it all off. Living well never felt so good. bendsinisterband.com

In addition to being one of the hardest working singer-songwriters around, touring endlessly in support of an ever-growing catalogue, Shotgun Jimmie is also one of the nicest, unfailingly sincere guys in Canada. He plays sing-along indie rock that comes straight from his heart of gold and, like the Midas touch, turns everything around it into the same. shotgunjimmie.net

Breaking news: old-school-styled hip-hop hometown hero spits fly rhymes over fat beats, spreads sunshine. Those lamenting the dark turn rap took after the gangstas took over will find plenty of high-energy awesome humour under Sharp's shabby old hoodie. riccarazorsharp.com

Jonathan Toubin, NYC soul-DJ extraordinaire, returns to Sled Island after spending the first half of 2012 recovering from a freak accident in which a taxi crashed into his hotel room and left him
in critical condition. His recovery is a relief for everyone and his return to Sled hugely anticipated. facebook.com/jonathan.toubin

  • Sled Island Presents: Lou Barlow w/No Sinner and Field + Stream
    June 20

Sled Island Presents: Lou Barlow w/No Sinner and Field + Stream

Lounge opens at 4:00pm and bands at 9:00pm.

As a founding member of Dinosaur Jr., Lou Barlow was instrumental in defining the sound of grunge and alternative rock in the late ‘80s. As the central force behind Sebadoh, he spearhead- ed the lo-fi home recording movement which spawned legends like Guided by Voices, Smog and Beck. Barlow’s songs run the gamut from goofy to heart-wrenching, but are always tuneful and engaging. loobiecore.com

If can you go an entire No Sinner show without falling in love with powerhouse vocalist Colleen Rennison, congratulations, you have no soul. Speaking of soul, you know who’s got soul? No Sinner. That swagger you’ve always loved so much in rock music is alive an well here. There will be sweat. There will be dancing. There will be sinning. nosinner.bandcamp.com

Lo-fi nostalgia manifests itself in a longing for a more natural connection to this beautiful province of ours in Field & Stream’s pop. It’s about a time before pavement, when the air was crisp and fresh with opportunity. Take your shoes off and feel the cool grass between your toes. That’s the feeling of the hope that everything will get better. fieldandstream.ca

  • Sled Island Presents: BORIS w/ THE WEIR & WITCHSTONE
    June 21

Sled Island Presents: BORIS w/ THE WEIR & WITCHSTONE

t’s no surprise that the Japanese, genre-bending masters take their name from a Melvins song. Both bands refuse to adhere to tradition or even reason at times, traipsing across and through arbitrary genre boundaries with anarchic glee to create something at once impossibly abstract and wholeheartedly organic. Since 1994, Boris have quickly gained a cult following across the world for their uncanny ability to mix the powerful with the sublime, the down-tuned with the shoe-gazing ethereal, the soul-crushing heavy with the cherry-blossom beautiful to create absolute masterpieces that exist in a perfectly deranged world imagined by the trio. Guitarist Wata, bassist Takeshi and drummer/vocalist Atsuo understand the innate language of the avant-garde and experimental, clashing minimalist drone elements with sludgy ferocity and noisy charm. Boris are one of the most ambitious bookings of the festival this year and will reward anyone who can conceptualize music that is bigger and beyond them. It’s mind-expanding material done with honesty, rather than pretension, that seeks to unlock the infinite creative potential of music. inoxia-rec.com/boris

You know that post-apocalyptic dream you’ve been having where there’s little hope for humanity and everything you love in the world is on fire? Good news, The Weir have had it, too! Now you can feel less alone and listen to crushing sludgy doom without fear of alienation. Bring earplugs. facebook.com/pages/the-Weir/163321613777117

Drop out of life with bong in hand, and follow the riff to the smoke filled land. Local quartet Witchstone has bridged the gap between 1998 era Sleep and 2012 era Calgary, and their massive reverberating riffs will provide the doom soundtrack for your Sled Island. Consume in moderation, lest your eardrums ring for days. witchstone.bandcamp.com
